Marseille¡¯s chances minimal against Bayern-Deschamps

Munich Germany, April 2 (Reuters) - Olympique Marseille¡¯s chances of advancing past Bayern Munich and into the Champions League semi-finals may be minimal after last week¡¯s 2-0 defeat in France but the team need to go in with a winning mentality, said coach Didier Deschamps on Monday.

Marseille arrived in Munich, site of their biggest triumph in 1993 when they were crowned European champions with Deschamps as captain, after a six-hour delay due to a strike in France.

¡°We will have a lot of quality against us but at the end we do not want to regret anything and we will see what comes out of it,¡± Deschamps said. ¡°The chances are minimal.¡±

Marseille go into Tuesday¡¯s quarter-final return leg having lost eight of their last nine games in all competitions.

The former European champions, who are ninth in the league, got a break when their weekend Ligue 1 game against Montpellier was put back to help them prepare against Bayern.

¡°I think we had very busy weeks. We worked well on Saturday and Sunday and that had not been possible before because we had so many games. At least we will not be complaining about a lack of freshness,¡± Deschamps said.

¡°Bayern are used to a busy schedule. They are this big machine that keeps rolling on in all competitions,¡± he said.

Bayern are in the running for a treble of domestic league, cup and the Champions League.

Deschamps ruled out an openly offensive game by his team as that would be too dangerous against a team like Bayern.

¡°We have to reach our maximum in all parts of our game,¡± he said. ¡°We cannot throw everything in front from the first minute. We need to defend well just like we did for 43 minutes in the first game.

¡°It is still a Champions League quarter-final. We have to be realistic but we have to go in with a winning mentality. We have not lost any of our quality. We have to be happy and we still believe in this.

¡°I want to tell my players of the privilege of being here. That privilege comes with responsibilities and I demand a good performance,¡± said Deschamps.

Barcelona vs AC Milan preview - Allegri urges fighting spirit

AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri believes his team will need to show the same courage and determination they displayed against Barcelona last week when the two teams meet in the return leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

The two sides drew 0-0 in the first match in Milan and their last-eight tie is finely balanced heading to the Nou Camp.

"We must play as we did in the opening leg and make sure we don't concede a goal," Allegri said.

"This game is like a final and we are ready."

Allegri considers holders Barcelona favourites to progress to the last four but insists his team can pull off a surprise.

"I expect the strongest Barcelona side," he said. "Barcelona remain the best team in the world.

"But I believe there will be two or three situations during tomorrow's game where the tie could be decided and we need to be smart to interpret them well.

"I am confident we can score a goal."

The Rossoneri travel to Spain on the back of Saturday's 1-1 draw at Catania which allowed Juventus to close the gap on the Serie A leaders to two points.

"Our chances of winning the scudetto remain intact," Allegri said. "Our focus right now is on the Champions League."

Kevin Prince-Boateng is set to play in support of attacking pair Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Robinho.

Brazil forward Alexandre Pato could feature tomorrow having shaken off a muscular injury.

"Pato trained yesterday with the team for the first time in a month," Allegri said.

"I will evaluate his fitness later today before I make my decision."

Defender Alessandro Nesta and midfielder Clarence Seedorf return to the starting XI having rested at the weekend.

Barcelona, meanwhile, are worrying over the fitness of midfielder Xavi.

The Spain international sustained a muscular injury during Saturday's 2-0 triumph over Athletic Bilbao and is doubtful for the encounter.

Cesc Fabregas, who missed the clash against Athletic with a back problem, could take Xavi's place in Barca's starting XI.

Barca have not lost at the Nou Camp in European competition since a 2-1 defeat to Rubin Kazan in October 2009, but striker Pedro believes his side's unbeaten run at home will be tested on Tuesday.

"It's going to be a complicated game," he said. "Milan will not make our lives easy and we will have to play a great game.

"Milan have great players and we cannot be over-confident."

Pedro will start on the bench with Alexis Sanchez set to partner Lionel Messi up front.

Who will score the the first goal of the UEFA CL of 2013-2014?
With the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovi? hoping to hit the first group stage goal of the season for the second time, who do you think will register first?
With the UEFA Champions League shortly to kick off, one of the first issues to be settled will be the identity of this season's opening goalscorer, with several of this season's contenders having the chance to register the first strike of the group stage for the second time.
Eight games start simultaneously at 20.45CET on Tuesday evening and, with each team determined to gain a flying start, what better way to lay down a marker than to hit the first goal in this season's competition. But which player will get it?
Real Madrid CF have reached three successive semi-finals and it would surprise few if they notch the competition's first when they travel to Galatasaray A? in Group B. With his exceptional strike rate, it is little surprise that Cristiano Ronaldo has already achieved the accolade, finding the net with a 27th-minute free-kick in a 5-2 win at FC Z¨¹rich in 2009/10. The Portuguese forward also struck twice in the Ali Sami Yen Spor Kompleksi last season, including a goal in just the seventh minute, but may have competition from within his own ranks. Madrid's summer signing Isco was the man who struck the opening goal of last season's competition, bending in a peach of a shot within three minutes against FC Zenit for M¨¢laga CF.
Another player who will have the chance to score the first goal for the second time will be Zlatan Ibrahimovi? as his Paris Saint-Germain FC side head to Olympiacos FC. The Sweden forward struck after just 11 minutes in AFC Ajax's 2002/03 win against Olympique Lyonnais in 2002/03, and also scored on matchday one in 2010/2011 and 2012/2013
With AC Milan, FC Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund all playing on Wednesday the likes of Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski and Mario Balotelli miss out on the chance to make their mark first, but Sergio Ag¨¹ero, who claimed the honour in 2008/09 in Club Atl¨¦tico de Madrid's 3-0 win at PSV Eindhoven, will have the opportunity with current club Manchester City FC at FC Viktoria Plzen.
If you are looking to make predictions you may want to focus on Brazilian and Spanish players. Each nation has produced four first scorers, the highest number, with France the nation of three. With Spaniards Fernando Llorente at Juventus and ¨¢lvaro Negredo of City both in with a shout of leading their respective lines come kick-off, while FC Shakhtar Donetsk¡¯s strong Brazilian contingent, including Luiz Adriano, Bernard and Taison, could all be ones to watch out for
In terms of the fastest goal, Andras M?ller and Pato both struck within the opening 60 seconds, in 1995/96 and 2011/12 respectively while Ronaldo's effort in 2009 came in at 27 minutes, the longest wait for the deadlock to be broken. The omens are also good for the team who score the first goal; 17 of the 22 fastest goals have set their side on the way to victory.
